You may want to connect your Laptop to a TV for several reasons. It will give you a larger viewing area for your computer work and may make it easier on your eyes if you are working on a computer for a long period of time. You may need to make a presentation to a large group of people and need a large monitor so you won't have to crowd everyone around your little laptop.
You may want to watch movies on DVD from your laptop and being able to display them on a larger monitor makes your viewing experience more delightful. My friend recently connected her work laptop to a new 24" HDTV and she loves it. She did this simply to have a larger screen that was easier on her eyes.

When you connect the laptop to a TV the laptop's built-in display also remains active. If you are using the TV to provide a larger display for a presentation to a large group of people, position the laptop and PC so you can see both screens.
You can connect the TV set by using a standard S-video cable or a composite-video adapter with a standard RCA-type video cable. You do not have to turn the computer off to connect the cable. After you have connected the cable to the TV set and laptop then power on the TV. At this point you can shutdown and restart the computer or you can go to your control panel and select display settings and select the TV option.
You can also play DVD movies on the TV. To do this from your control panel select the settings tab and then under advanced make the TV primary. Hardwiring your laptop to a TV for both video and sound can present the problem of needing to hide the wires, get them correctly installed and having the right length cable available when you need it. So, you might want to take the wireless approach.
If you want to consider the wireless approach you may want to look into a Wireless PC to TV converter. They have been around for several years and have in the past primarily been used by businesses and schools as teaching aids.
Today, they are in bigger demand in private homes in order to bridge the gap between TV and laptop. There are even versions that allow you to transmit up to 450 feet. You can broadcast your DVDs, DSS, CDs, MP3s, gaming console as well as your laptop functions to any TV in your home or office without wires. The GX5200 Wireless Sender is an example of one of these types of devices. It sports a long-range 5.8GHz radio frequency. These type devices can be purchased through your local electronics stores or online at Amazon or Ebay.
One problem that some customers have encountered with wireless setups from their Laptop to the TV is that the wireless device transmitted on the same frequency as their computer network or cordless phones. In this case, purchasing a different brand which used a different frequency solved their problem.
If you are trying to transmit from your Laptop to a TV in another room in the house then wireless is probably your best solution. It is certainly worth looking into before you make a purchase. However you hook up you will find that using a larger TV screen versus your small laptop screen can make some tasks in your life a lot easier.
