Due to the popularity and cost effectiveness of plasma and LCD displays, people are now installing them in their garden as an extension of their home.
When installing an outdoor TV, you have to incorporate a solution that offers waterproof and vandal protection, otherwise you may as well leave the television on the sidewalk for some one to take.
Now one of the main questions asked is what material is best?
Plastic?
Well it is cheap to buy, then you need special machinery to bend it and weld it to produce an outdoor HDTV case. Then there is the issue of mounting the TV, as plastic will snap if you put any great weight on to it, so you cannot mount the TV to the back of the plastic case.
There is no way to make a waterproof plastic enclosure unless you go to the huge expense of injection moulding and these dies can cost ,000's to make.
As for vandal protection this has none, all a potential thief has to do is smash the case with a hammer and take your new HD television.
Wood?
This is also a cheap material and is readily available, but again there is no way in which to make a timber or wooden TV enclosure waterproof, were ever a join is, this will be a vulnerable point in the unit and you cannot fill the gap as the filler will degrade over time, you will not notice until it is too late and you have to buy another TV.
Again, little if any vandal protection as all a thief only needs is a hammer to smash the timber case.
Steel?
This is the ideal material, as it can be fully welded along all joints and welds can be double "bedded", to ensure a waterproof solution. Now here comes the balance as anyone with a garage can make a steel box, the speciality comes with the heating and cooling of this box, without adequate cooling the TV overheats and the TV has to be replaced.
Anti vandal protection is high with a steel LCD enclosure, as this is cannot be smashed open with a hammer and special cutting tools and grinders are necessary, who knows a thief who goes prepared with a grinder in their tool kit?
This coupled with high security locks prevent any un-authorised access to the enclosure ensuring your television display is totally protected.
